Measure Properly Before Purchasing Fence Materials

Purchasing quality fence materials is a good investment for your property, but only if you have taken the proper land measurements beforehand to ensure that your fence is the right dimensions. Even a small miscalculation can create a big (and potentially costly) problem for the fence installation.

Taking Proper Measurements

Before you begin, review your property boundaries to double check that you are building only on your own property. Review local zoning codes and restrictions since these may restrict or determine which fence materials you can buy.

Next, lay out your proposed fence using stakes and string. Be sure that any corners have exact 90-degree angles by using the 3-4-5-triangle technique. Mark one side of the angle three feet from the proposed fencepost, and then mark the other side of the angle four feet from the fencepost. The distance from the first mark to the second should be five feet. Adjust the string accordingly.

If your ground slopes, determine the percentage of the slope because this will affect whether you step or rack the fence. If using preassembled panels, your only option will be to step the fence (stepping the entire panel up or down and filling in gaps beneath). Racking the fence (staggering each picket) is only an option if you are assembling the fence picket by picket.

Obviously, you will also want to check for obstructions such as trees, utility lines, and pipes, since such obstacles could shift the placement of your fence.

Finally, double-check your work and review your plans and sketches with your fence materials supplier before you agree to your purchase.
